How does cervical screening prevent cancer?
Cervical screening is a free test to check the health of your cervix and is used to test if you are at risk of developing cervical cancer. The cervix is the opening of your womb from your vagina.
9 out of 10 cervical cancers are caused by certain types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is spread through any form of sexual contact with a man or woman.
HPV is not the only cause of cervical cancer. You can get cervical cancer if you have never had sex.
HPV can lead to cell changes in your cervix. Abnormal cells in your cervix, left untreated, could turn into cancer.
To find out when your next cervical screening test is due please refer to the CervicalCheck’s ‘When is my next cervical screening test due?’ page.
